Amateur Piobaireachd Contest

Piobaireachd is the classical music of the bagpipe. Since 2018, the Ottawa Branch has held an annual piobaireachd contest for amateur pipers.

Categories

Senior Piobaireachd

  • Requirements: One (1) full piobaireachd – own choice

  • Grade 1 Light Music equivalent

Intermediate Piobaireachd

  • Requirements: One (1) full piobaireachd – own choice

  • Grade 2 Light Music equivalent

Junior Piobaireachd

  • Requirements: One (1) full piobaireachd – own choice

  • Grade 3 Light Music equivalent

Novice Piobaireachd

  • Requirements: One (1) piobaireachd and play only the ground and the next two passages - own choice

  • Grade 4 / 5 Light Music equivalent

Pipe Major George D. Buchanan Memorial Trophy

The P/M George D. Buchanan Memorial Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Senior category. This trophy was donated by Donald Buchanan in memory of his late father, who was a leading member of the Branch in its early days, and a proponent of piobaireachd and its importance for the musical development of pipers.
