Michael Grey Workshop – Making pipe band music with impact

Michael Grey, one of the most prolific composers of the pipe band world, gave a well attended workshop on the afternoon of the Glengarry Cup piping contest, “Making pipe band music with impact”.

Michael worked the group through the elements of a pipe band arrangement and used an example, suggested by the participants, of a performance situation and an experience level of a band.

We were encouraged to think of the arrangement as a story with an opening, an introduction that lays the groundwork that introduces a feeling, then builds over small and interesting mid-points, keeping the build varied but not convoluted, unpredictable but not unreasonable in the context, to tease and engage the listener, and leading to something interesting and surprising. The process of making the arrangement from the end through to the beginning was explored.
