Join us on February 23 for piping and drumming group workshops with Ryan Canning and Andrew Lawson of the House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead pipe band.
Ryan Canning was recently appointed as the Pipe Major of Shotts and brings with him truly world class experience as a player and composer. Originally from Northern Ireland, Ryan spent 16 years with the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band where he won 40 RSPBA major championships, including 6 World Championship titles, a Grand Slam, and 9 RSPBA Champion of Champions awards. Ryan’s book of music The Full Monty published in 2004 contains tunes played by some of the world’s top pipe bands. Ryan is also the owner of Canning Reedmakers, and teaches at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow.
Since 2004 Andrew Lawson has been a member of the world class Shotts Drum Corps under Jim Kilpatrick MBE, having played previously with Toronto Police and Peel Regional Police. With Shotts he has won numerous band and drumming titles including the 2005 World Championship (overall and drumming), the 2011 World Champion Drum Corps, and 5 Champion of Champions drumming prizes. He has consistently placed in the top of many solo contests, including fourth in the World Solo Drumming Championships in 2012. Andrew originally hails from Ontario and we look forward to welcoming him home.
The workshops will cover rudiments, technique and execution as well as setup and tuning. Morning sessions will be open to beginner and intermediate players, with afternoon sessions for advanced players. Participants should bring instruments as well as practice chanters/pads.
All workshops will take place at the Naval Officers’ Mess, 78 Lisgar Street.
